I got a lot from this post, Lee. But want to talk about your second point. I agree that many younger people you pass on the street are self- focused. But I think this is a choice also, (not just for Texans). I went to a town celebration of 250 years yesterday and watched an hour long parade. Really got into the spirit and waved at some kids on a float then decided to wave at everyone in the parade. How awful to be someone in a parade that no one waves and cheers over). I really got interested in waving and cheering every part of the parade and noticed how good it felt to be cheering and smiling and waving, how infectious it was, a genuine happy time for everyone there. I want to do it- acknowledge people- more often.
